The story of Anjuna goes back centuries. The
name Anjuna (Hanjun) has Muslim connotations probably reverting to Arab
influence in the past. Anjuna remained a quiet fishing village with a mix of
Catholic and Hindu population till the late 60s and the 70s, when it was
discovered by the hippie generation, and became a hideout for itinerants,
freaks and soul-seekers. This bohemian ambience pervades Anjuna to this day,
and many of these now venerable old gentlemen continue to reside here till this
day. The famous full moon parties that began then have now transformed into the
trance parties of today, held at places such as Bamboo Forest, Nine Bar,
Hilltop, etc.
The Wednesday Flea Market, which began in the 70s when a few of the foreign
residents started selling their music and blue jeans (a rarity in Goa at that
time), has now become a lively market place, where artisans from all over the
world sells their wares, and live bands play all day long. The famous
Albuquerque Mansion, built in the 20s and modeled after the palace of the
Sultan of Zanzibar, is also worth a visit, as is the nearby Vagator beach and
the Chapora fort.
In Anjuna, you will find an eclectic mix of ayurvedic massage and
yoga/meditation places, organic food stores, restaurants and cafes serving
world cuisine as well as delectable Goan food.
Don't be surprised if you chance upon someone talking to the trees or throwing
fire on the beach. All in all, there's never a dull moment in Anjuna!
